Aliyah from the United Kingdom
From the Great British Isles, home to the Land of Israel.
A 40-year high in British Aliyah. From Hampstead to Hale, Whitefield to Alwoodley, more UK families are making the journey home than at any time since the 1980s — and we walk it with them, end to end.

THE THREE COMMUNITIES
Every British Jewish heartland has its own road to Israel.
More than two-thirds of UK Aliyah originates from three cities. Each has its own rhythm, its own communal infrastructure, its own questions for us. We know all three.
i. London
Hendon · Golders Green · Stanmore · Edgware · Borehamwood · Hampstead
The largest UK Jewish community and the source of more than half of British Aliyah. London families typically face the most complex pre-departure picture — UK property, multi-jurisdictional pensions, professional licensing, and school placement for children mid-academic year.
→ Tel Aviv & Ra'anana absorption pathways → Modi'in & Beit Shemesh family planning → UK property letting & sale coordination → School registration in Anglo-friendly communities
ii. Manchester
Whitefield · Prestwich · Hale · Bowdon · Salford · Crumpsall
Britain's second-largest Jewish community, and one whose relationship with Aliyah has shifted markedly since the Heaton Park synagogue attack of October 2025. Manchester families often arrive with stronger Hebrew-language exposure and clearer religious orientation, simplifying community matching in Israel.
→ Religious Zionist community matching → Bnei Akiva & Aish alumni pathways → Greater Manchester property unwinding → Direct Manchester → Tel Aviv routing
iii. Leeds
Alwoodley · Moortown · Sandhinger · Roundhay · Shadwell
A close-knit community of around 6,500, with a strong tradition of Religious Zionism and disproportionate per-capita Aliyah rates. Leeds olim tend to integrate exceptionally well into Israel's Anglo religious-Zionist communities, particularly in the Jerusalem corridor and Modi'in.
→ Modi'in & Efrat religious-Zionist routes → Yorkshire property network coordination → UJIA & Leeds Aliyah liaison → Zayit programme & post-army placement
Who Qualifies
The Law of Return & you.
Aliyah is a right, not a privilege earned through bureaucracy. The State of Israel grants citizenship to every Jew, every child and grandchild of a Jew, and their immediate family — anywhere in the world.
Jews — Born to a Jewish mother, or completed a recognised conversion to Judaism. Children — Of at least one Jewish parent — including children of Jewish fathers (under the 1970 amendment). Grandchildren — Of at least one Jewish grandparent. The most common eligibility route for UK applicants with one Jewish line. Spouses — Of any of the above, including the spouse of a deceased Jewish partner. Converts — Through a recognised Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform conversion, with documented community participation.
The right itself
"Every Jew has the right to come to this country as an oleh."
The Law of Return, 5710–1950, remains the most generous immigration framework in the world for those eligible. The 1970 amendment extended that right to non-Jewish spouses, children, and grandchildren of Jews — recognising that families travel together.
If you are uncertain about your status — particularly through grandparental lineage or undocumented family history — we will assess privately and without obligation before you commit to anything.
The Journey End To End
Eight to twelve months from first call to first day.
There is a sequence to Aliyah, and it does not bend. The order in which you obtain documents, the timing of your ACRO certificate, the moment you book your flight — each affects the next. We choreograph all of it.
1. Month 1 · Discovery Initial consultation & eligibility assessment A private call to understand your circumstances — your Jewish status, family composition, professional position, financial situation, and aspirations. We assess eligibility, identify likely complications early, and outline the bespoke pathway.
2. Months 1–3 · Documentation Civil documents, rabbinic letter & ACRO certificate Birth certificates, marriage or civil partnership certificates, and any divorce decrees ordered from the General Register Office. ACRO Police Certificate applied for (a DBS will not be accepted). Rabbinic letter on shul letterhead arranged with your community rabbi.
3. Months 2–4 · FCDO Apostille Authentication via the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Every civil document and your ACRO certificate must bear an FCDO apostille — Israel does not accept unauthenticated UK documents under any circumstances. We manage the FCDO submission directly to avoid the most common cause of UK Aliyah delay.
4. Month 4–5 · Jewish Agency Aliyah file opened & Shaliach interview Your file is formally lodged with the Jewish Agency. You will be interviewed by the regional Shaliach (typically in London). We prepare you for this conversation in detail — it is meaningful, not adversarial, and goes well when properly briefed.
5. Month 6–7 · Visa & approval Aliyah visa issued by the Israeli Embassy in London Following your "Mazal Tov" approval letter, your Aliyah visa is issued through the Embassy in Kensington. The visa is valid for six months — long enough to coordinate the move properly, but a clock that begins ticking the moment it is stamped.
6. Months 7–10 · The move itself Lift, schools, banking, housing, healthcare Container shipping coordinated. Israeli bank account opened pre-arrival where possible. School placements confirmed. Initial accommodation secured in your chosen community. Health fund (Kupat Cholim) registration prepared. UK affairs unwound.
7. Landing day & beyond Ben Gurion arrival, Teudat Zehut & beyond Your flight is met. Your Teudat Zehut (national ID) issued at the airport. Sal Klita absorption funding activated. We accompany you through the first three months — Bituach Leumi, ulpan, driving licence conversion, and the hundred small frictions that nobody warns you about.
UK Specifics
Britain has its own fine print. We read it.
The UK is not the United States, and Aliyah from London does not look like Aliyah from New York. There are particular British documents, particular British tax considerations, and particular British errors we see again and again.
i. ACRO, never DBS Israeli authorities require an ACRO Police Certificate from every applicant aged 14 and over. A DBS check — which most British employers use — is not accepted for Israeli immigration. Submitting a DBS is the single most frequent cause of British Aliyah delay. ⚠ Common error
ii. FCDO Apostille Every civil document — birth, marriage, divorce, ACRO — requires an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office at Milton Keynes. Israel is a Hague Convention signatory; UK documents without an apostille have no legal status in Israel.
iii. UK State Pension Your UK State Pension can typically continue to be paid after Aliyah, including direct deposit to an Israeli bank account. The annual triple-lock uplift, however, is generally frozen at the rate at the time of departure. Specialist tax advice is essential.
iv. UK / Israel Double Tax Treaty The UK and Israel maintain a comprehensive double-taxation agreement covering pensions, employment income, and most investment income. New olim also receive a 10-year Israeli tax holiday on foreign-source income — a window worth structuring around.
v. National Insurance Contributions Departing the UK does not automatically pause NI. Voluntary Class 2 or Class 3 contributions can be paid from Israel to preserve UK State Pension entitlement — usually at modest cost. We recommend deciding before departure rather than after.
vi. Property in the United Kingdom Most British olim retain UK property — at least initially. Letting through a managed UK agent, navigating non-resident landlord status with HMRC, and structuring rental income against the Israeli tax holiday are all components we coordinate alongside qualified UK advisors.
SAL KLITA & OLEH CHADASH STATUS
What the State of Israel gives back.
Aliyah is a one-way move with two-way generosity. Israel actively underwrites the cost of immigration through a substantial benefit package — financial, medical, professional, and educational.
i. Sal Klita absorption basket A monthly stipend paid for the first six to twelve months, covering rent, living costs, and transition expenses. The amount varies by family size and circumstance — for most British families it is meaningful, not symbolic.
ii. Free Hebrew ulpan Five months of intensive Hebrew tuition at no cost — typically five mornings a week. We recommend ulpan even for those with prior Hebrew; the Israeli civic vocabulary is worth acquiring formally.
iii. Free flight Your one-way Aliyah flight is paid for by the Jewish Agency, on group El Al departures or as individually-arranged flights with reimbursement. Children, household, hand luggage and pets all included within reasonable allowances.
iv. Health coverage from day one National Health Insurance through your chosen Kupat Cholim begins the day you land — no waiting period, no underwriting, no exclusions. Emergency, routine, and specialist care included.
v. 10-year tax holiday New olim are exempt from Israeli tax on foreign-source income for ten years — including UK pensions, rental income, and most investment income. The single most valuable financial benefit, and the one most often under-leveraged.
vi. Customs & shipping reliefs Three duty-free container shipments over three years. Significant discount on a new Israeli-purchased car. Reduced municipal taxes (arnona) for the first year. Reduced national insurance contributions for an extended period.
“The decision to make Aliyah is not made on a spreadsheet. It is made in the heart, and then the spreadsheet is built around it.”
FAQ
The questions every British family asks first.
i. Can I make Aliyah if my Jewish line is through my grandfather? Yes. The Law of Return extends to grandchildren of Jews — including paternal-grandfather lineage. You will not be considered halachically Jewish by the Israeli Rabbinate, but you receive full Israeli citizenship, the full Sal Klita benefits, and the right to live anywhere in Israel. This is the most common UK eligibility route for partly-Jewish families.
ii. My spouse isn't Jewish — can they make Aliyah with me? Yes, under the 1970 amendment to the Law of Return. The non-Jewish spouse of an eligible Jew receives full Aliyah status, full citizenship, and identical benefits. The same applies to minor non-Jewish children. We process whole families regularly — it is the normal case, not the exception.
iii. How long does the entire process actually take? Eight to twelve months end-to-end is realistic for a typical British case — three of those months are document gathering, one to two are FCDO apostille processing, and the balance is Jewish Agency processing, visa issuance, and the move itself. Cases with conversion documentation, complex marital history, or remote-issued birth certificates can run longer.
iv. Should I sell my UK property before Aliyah? Almost never immediately. Most British olim retain UK property as a hedge — particularly in the first 12–24 months while assessing whether Israel suits them long-term. The structuring question is around HMRC non-resident landlord status, capital gains exposure on eventual sale, and how rental income interacts with the 10-year Israeli tax holiday. This is a question for qualified UK and Israeli tax advisors working in concert.
v. Will my professional qualifications transfer? It depends on the profession. Doctors, dentists, lawyers, and pharmacists face formal licensing routes that can take 12–24 months — though Israel actively recruits foreign physicians through the International Medical Aliyah programme, and 93 doctors made Aliyah from North America in 2025 alone. Architects, engineers, accountants, teachers, and most regulated professions have established conversion pathways. Tech, finance, marketing, design, and most non-regulated fields require no licensing at all — you can begin work the day you arrive.
vi. What about my children's schooling? Schooling is universal, free, and begins from arrival. For Anglo families in London, Manchester, and Leeds we typically guide toward English-friendly absorption schools in Modi'in, Ra'anana, Beit Shemesh, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem — depending on religious orientation and budget. The Israeli school year runs September to June, and mid-year transitions are routine and well-supported.
vii. Is now actually the right time, given the security situation? A question every honest advisor must address. Israel has been at war since October 2023, and 2025 included a 12-day war with Iran. And yet British Aliyah hit a 40-year high in 2025, French Aliyah surged 45%, and 21,900 olim arrived in total. The decision is deeply personal — but the data shows that, for many British Jewish families, the calculation has changed. We will discuss this honestly with you, not promotionally.
